The first IPsec for Linux was FreeS/WAN. Here's their discussion
of the terms "client" and "server"

FreeS/WAN interoperated with both Check Point and Sonicwall products.
Search for those names in the above doc for details.

FreeS/WAN no longer exists. One of the descendants at openswan.org
or strongswan.org might be what you want.
