8.04 to 8.10

when you say you 'stopped the upgrade', was the upgrade-manager still
downloading packages, or was it actually installing things?
Also, have you tried running
update-manager -d
to see if the option comes back up to upgrade to 8.10? Note: if it
suggests upgrading to 9.04, rather than 8.10, DO NOT DO IT. Your system
is already in a fuzzy state because of the stopped upgrade, so that
could only make things worse.
However, if it simply tells you that 8.10 is available again, then try
upgrading to that with the upgrade tool through update-manager
(presumably it will be re-downloaded, or it will start from where it
left off).
