My workspace switcher cannot change names

Go to System --> Preferences --> Appearance
Click on Visual Effects
Set to None
Right click on a Workspace and Select Preferences

This will allow you to rename the workspaces, however, I don't think
they stay named if you turn Visual Effects back on.  I could be wrong
though, never tried it.
