funny disk trouble after kernel upgrade to 2.6.31-15-generic. Got ideas?

I have Ubuntu 9.10 on a Lenovo T61. Since the new kernel was
installed, I've had some bizarre hard disk trouble.
It started after a 'suspend to ram'. I restarted the system and the
hard disk was mounted read only. There was beeping from the
motherboard. Not good. The system did run, programs were open, but it
could not write anything.
Upon a restart, I see some warnings flash on the screen. They go by
very fast, they say something like /dev/UUID-1324324132114 not yet
available. The first time this happened, those warnings stayed on the
screen longer.
It seems to me that whenever I let the newer kernel boot, I get that
same kind of warning, it goes by fast. If I select the previous
kernel, I don't see the same trouble. I don't hear the motherboard
beeps anymore, thank goodness.
I don't think the hard disk is failing, if I read this correctly
