Updating to Ubuntu 9.10 and ERRORS

Dear Ubuntu users,

  I have tried to upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 many times and I just can't do it.
It will install on my system and then when I restart and start up in Ubuntu,
it just fails and keeps flashing *ERROR* Failed to restore crtc
configuration.  Can anybody help me on this?  I have a Lenovo dektop with 2
gb of ram and I'm currently running Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.04

You use 'sudo apt-get install' tar.gz files? Pretty interesting...

Note: you can user the searchbox on any of the above just the same as
you can with Google. https://help.ubuntu.com actually uses a custom
local Google search engine - that's why you get Google advertisements on
the pages. Hint: install addblock plus in your browser to get rid of them.

Back to your tar.gz file;
To extract the tar.gz, use the Archive Manager (File Roller). This is
the default & when you double-click the tar.gz file from within Nautilus
(Places|Home etc), you will automatically launch the Archive Manager - see:

But for now, I'd recommend simply using Synaptic or Applications|Ubuntu
Software Center (dvd::rip is located under sound & video) to install the
package. And no, you wouldn't use 'sudo apt-get install' to install a
tar.gz file & it's generally a much better idea to install packages from
the Ubuntu repositories if they are available. There are exceptions to
that last, but for now just stick with what is available:-)

I'm using the NNTP backend for newsgroups and the IMAP backend for mail. No
need to convert anything.

Free/Libre/Open Source Software.

Usually FOSS is good enough for most people, but Libre is the French
term for free (as in speech), so some people add it in to be
absolutely clear.

Configuration is very simple: with your newsreader you subscribe to 
gmane.linux.ubuntu.user and you can read the group in your favorite 
newsreader. You can also post to the group as long as you use a valid 
email-address in the From: header. Gmane will send all your messages to 
the email-list and will post all email-list messages in the newsgroup. 
Depending on your newsreader all messages are threaded and/or ordered by 
date in one place.

absolutely yes, the 'newbies' who prefere gmane are however welcome to do 
so, but you might as well just go use a web forum.

I prefer for it to be delivered to me so i can choose what I read when i 
want to read it, pine and procmail do the sorting and dump the rest 
(unlesss I sent that person an email from this account since its only used 
for usenet/some lists) into /dev/null...
