could't add trash icon on the desktop

Well, I am out of suggestions.  I also did the same thing you did and the
trash can did not appear on my desktop either.  Just did not want to kill
the windowing system at the moment so I threw out the restart suggestion.
Guess I was wrong.  I always right click on items for the Move To Trash so I
do not even have the trash can icon on my desktop at all.   Might want to
check the Ubuntu Forums.  They often have some very helpful insight to
problems.
