Thanks for the bump. I meant to post an update yesterday, but sick kids
and all--
The fglrx driver seems to have been the culprit. I came across some
hardy-era bugs that were somewhat similar to my issue, and most of the
suggestions focused on the video drivers. So I removed the fglrx
drivers, restarted the system, and user switching now works. When I get
a chance in the next day or so, I'll figure out where to file a bug.
