Karmic Koala installation problem

Live CD - boot from the cd to a running distribution without making any changes to (installing on) your disk drives. There will be an icon on the running desktop called "Install". (If you download the "alternate" cd from the mirrors, it will boot directly to the installation application and won't take you to a desktop until hard disk installation is complete and you won't see the install icon.)

Another thought, make a copy of /etc/X11/xorg.conf from your running 9.04 install and copy it to the 9.10 /etc/X11/ directory. I would think if there's an X problem it would only manifest in display problems, but I've seen some flaky X behaviors.

not sure what you are referring to when you say “live cd”. i created an install cd from the downloaded iso and it ran just fine – no errors.

Does the live cd run OK?

i have tried installing ubuntu 9.10 on a dell latitude d600 on which i had previously installed ubuntu 9.04 without any issues. the first time i ran the upgrade install, the second a clean install. both attempts yielded the same results – 9.10 installs and boots up just fine, but the first time i try to open any of the applications or utilities everything locks up.

at this point i have successfully reinstall 9.04, which is working fine, but i would really like to move to 9.10. any ideas as to what my problem might be?
