Not true.
i386 is for 32 bit CPUs, both Intel and AMD.
amd64 is for 64 bit CPUs, both Intel and AMD
The reason for the naming is that AMD designed the first 64 bit Intel
compatible CPU so the instruction set is generally known as amd64.
You only really need 64 bit ubuntu if you have more then 4GB of RAM.
