You should be able to run Windows under kvm (kernel-based virtual
machine) and qemu with little to no performance penalty on that machine.
Especially with the latest generation Deneb processors, AMD has
apparently made some significant improvements to context switching times
in virtual mode, not that the previous generation was any slouch. Having
said that, I think you could squander half your system resources and
still run Windows plenty fast. I've run Windows in VMWare hosted by
Linux on *much* slower hardware (P3/850MHz) with much less system
resources (512M RAM in total) and it was perfectly adequate but, I
didn't care about fast video frame rates or squeezing out the last bit
of performance either. It all depends on what you're trying to do.
