First, comparing Thunderbird to some list server software is an apples
to dump trucks comparison. Second, Thunderbird is not proprietary. It is
released under the same license as Mozilla Firefox. You can apt-get
install it, in fact.

For the record, I really like Mailman. We host many MM lists and it's
very reliable and easy-to-script. There are various ways to integrate it
with content management systems so that users never have to interact
with the MM web interface, which, as we know from this list, seems to
confuse people. Scratch that. I think people are confused in general
over how list servers work as evidenced by how many "Unsubscribe me."
messages are sent to this list, never mind that the directions for
managing one's subscription to the list are at the footer of every
message. It seems you could put, "I know where Jimmy Hoffa is buried."
at the footer of every message and no one would notice.
