Give wicd a try, if you can.  It worked for me on Jaunty when Network Manager 
didn't.  (I also had problems with Network Manager on my SuSE systems.

This is my first Ubuntu, so I don't know if it was available for 8.04, but if 
you can install it, it's definitely worth a try.
