What happens when you tried to start Firefox? Did it crash
immediately? Did you get any error messages? If you start it from the
gnome console, do you get any error messages before it crash?
Where did you find that ”Firefox off/line” to uncheck? Don't you have
to start it first? This is really confusing.

Exactly where do you type this? Not in Firefox, I guess, since Firefox
does not start, right? So whatever you type in your www.whatever, that
doesn't seem to connect. Still you said ”I struggled for a long time
to have an internet connection for Ubuntu
8.o4, we got it going” and ”Upgraded to Ubuntu 8.1o, everything just
fine”. What is fine? The Internet connection? Everything else but the
Internet connection?
Did you try another browser?
Well, as I said, this is confusing. Did Firefox start or not?
Somewhere in your text I get the impression that Firefox DID start,
but didn't connect, still you say, here and there, that Firefox didn't
start at all. If it didn't start (or if it crashed before its window
came up), you shouldn't be able to do any Firefox settings of any
kind, unless you change the Firefox settings by fiddling with text
files or something like that.
Kind regards
