sound notices

Hi,

I have Thunderbird, Lightning, and Pidgin installed on my laptop and all
the alarms, notices, and reminders make the laptop beep when they go
off.  They all sound the same to me and I would like to be able to tell
the difference between them.

Can someone tell me where I go in the programs to change each alarm,
notice, or reminder to a unique sound. Also, where are the different
sound files kept on ubuntu 8.04.  Where can I go to download more
(free/open) beeps or jingles?
