Booting from a cheap USB drive...

So, I have this generic 1GB USB drive that will only allow me to
format to 2048 byte sectors. I can't seem to get a bootloader to
handle that. They seem to want 512 byte sectors.

I also attempted to write the Ubuntu image for USB drives on there,
but none of my systems saw it as bootable (all Dell machines)... I
sort of figure it's the same issue, but I'm not sure.

Is there any hope to turn this USB drive into a bootable device? If
so, can you point me in the right direction?
