I recommend you Amarok, the KDE player. It handle a lot of meta-info just out
of the box (without any other help). You should give it a try.

soundKonverter is amazing, is a front-end (for KDE too) for a LOT of codecs,
it doesn't support any format by itself, so it detects and use the codecs you
have installed. It have a list of supported "modules" (programs=codecs) that
it support, I have to say that are more that I could find in the ubuntu
archives (mirror).
