Problems with configuring dialup on an external modem

Hello,
I am running Ubuntu 8.04, and am having problems getting my dialup to
work. After installing gnome-ppp, I was initially able to get my
external serial port modem up and running with no problems. Since then,
the modem connects successfully, but hangs up at exactly 30 seconds.
Following instructions in the Ubuntu Dial-up Wiki, I have set
carrier_check=no in wvdial.conf. When I try to connect with wvdial, the
authentication fails, although I know the password is correct.
I also made changes to the "/etc/ppp/options" file, commenting out the
lines:
#lcp-echo-interval=30, and
#lcp-echo-failure4.
Running wvdialconf gives the following output:

Found a modem on /dev/ttyS0.
Modem configuration written to /etc/wvdial.conf.
