    Hi Joe it does depend on the make and model of your laptop. I have a 
Presario CQ50 HP laptop with Intel Mobile 4 video hardware either Ubuntu 
8.10 or 9.04 will find the WiFi system automatic.

    I am using the Wicd software that seems to work much better for WiFi 
on Ubuntu 9.04.
