sure it's better if you can use http to suck the rootfs from the
server. Even if you tweak the block size transferring x hundred
megabytes via tftp is a PITA.

If you are familiar with building initrds you can start your own. But I
find the netboot stuff handy, because they contain all drivers etc. you
need for PXE booting. Just rip the installer off and integrate your own
logic. 

How do you want to store user generated data? USB sticks?
