Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the Mode "1280x768_60" is a custom 
style modeline where X native would only know 1280x768. w/o the _60

The stated modeline I think requires you to have a definition in your 
xorg.conf file similar to this one generated by running cvt 1280 768 on 
my system:

# 1280x768 59.87 Hz (CVT) hsync: 47.78 kHz; pclk: 79.50 MHz
Modeline "1280x768_60.00"   79.50  1280 1344 1472 1664  768 771 781 798 
-hsync +vsync

If you install the package x11-xserver-utils it will give you xrandr.
