Temporarily solved anyway. I did a "sudo apt-get purge googleearth &&
sudo apt-get autoremove" followed by "sudo apt-get install googleearth",
which gave me the newer version. Apparently Google has taken care of the
file incompatibilities. This version runs at least, although quite
slowly. I'm assuming the speed issue is directly related to the Intel
graphics problem. I'm running Intel on this laptop with the UXA
modifications (safe) installed and activated.
Thanks to all for the help.
