Have you been setting permissions on your home directory, or did you
copy or upgrade the system with a home directory from another
installation?

The permissions may wrong on either your home directory or just the
.mozilla directory in your home directory -- it sounds like Firefox is
not able to create the files it needs there. One way to check would be
to open a terminal and look at what is shown when you use the command
ls -la

do you see a .mozilla directory at all? If so, does it have the same
permissions as other directories? does it (and all the other files in
your home directory) have your username listed as the user and group?
