difference in ubuntu dvd/cd

the alternate install cd is text based, theres no xserver based install,
generally recommended if your having problems with the live cd.

the dvd has more software included, and can use it "live".  if i
remember correctly the restricted repo, and other repos are included.
nice if your on a metered connection.

desktop cd is the live cd, but only includes a limited amount of
software.  you can install anything you need afterwards from the repos.
