Email Trash problem

I have a problem with attempting to empty my old emails and trash bin. I
have a Dell Mini 9 with Ubunto 8.04 on it. When I go to empty the trash it
gives me an error message that the drive (8 gig) is full. Obviously it needs
room to dump the trash (old emails) and free up space. What can I do??
