Were I you, I'd set for 1492 to match the router. This is what I do on
my systems:

$ ifconfig
<snip>
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1492  Metric:1
          RX packets:11815 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:13714 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:6528916 (6.5 MB)  TX bytes:1758506 (1.7 MB)

Are you showing errors in your ifconfig?
