Thats because Xubuntu installs a lot of extra stuff designed to make the 
end users life easier.  Debian just installs the actual desktop 
environment.  You can get just as fast of a system if you use the ubuntu 
alternate installer, install the command line only system ( with "cli" as 
the boot option ), and run "apt-get install xfce4" after you get your 
network and whatnot up.
