advice for ubuntu on a small machine

This is why I recommend crunchbang/openbox, much lighter than even 
xubuntu/xfce.
Of course, you have many options for wms on ubuntu:
ion3 (what I'm using now), dwm, awm, jwm, xmonad...
all very lite.
