Quick Compiz question

Running Jaunty here, all updates. KDE 4.2 is my default desktop.

It's been working more or less fine but somehow I got my kde default
desktop scrunched up in a small part of the screen on the left hand
side. I've been reviewing Compiz keybindings, and trying a few, like
zoom, but that doesn't help to restore the desktop background to full
screen, it magnifies it at a bad resolution, much like resizing a low
res movie in mplayer - fuzzy, and it doesn't stick. The rest of the
desktop is a stipple black/white checkered background.

How can I fix this quickly without restarting X?
