>From what I've read Mark Shuttleworth wants Ubuntu to emulate Apple
more so than Micro$oft. In one article it said that starting with
9.10 Gnome was getting a major facelift of a similar scale to the
facelift KDE got when it went to version 4. That was a major change.
Ubuntu has come a long way, adding drag and drop, plug and play, and
other UI stuff isn't emulating Windows its just things users expect
from a modern day operating system. There are bound to be UI
similarities between multiple OSes, that's given, unless you go in a
completely different direction altogether but you run the risk of
alienating your user base if the changes are too drastic, and all for
the sake of making it look like you're not trying to copy off
Micro$oft. That would be pretty stupid, even for a community that's
as anti-Redmond as the Linux community.
What Ubuntu needs is something like Apple's World Wide Developer
Conference, a yearly thing where the Ubuntu community can connect with
the developers and also connect with third party developers and force
deals and alliances. What Ubuntu needs is commercial support beyond
what its getting with Dell and other PC makers who sell Ubuntu based
systems. Purists won't like the idea but the harsh reality of the OS
market is that commercial software support is key. Its the difference
between and OS that's a huge success and an OS that languishes in
obscurity. Linux has some commercial support right now but mostly in
the business sector, but there is little to nothing for home users
which is the bulk of Ubuntu's user base.
Pushing Ubuntu has an alternative gaming platform that better than
Windows might work. Imagine being able to get games via a Steam-style
package manager interface in Ubuntu without needing Wine.
