I don't know about all the features you mentioned there, but the only
audio player that I found (so far) that really can handle gap-less
audio playing decently, is SongBird. At least for FLAC (I don't use
other formats, so I don't know about them, maybe it plays them
gap-lessly too).

Also Aqualung can do this, but it has some other annoying behaviours,
so I wouldn't recommend that one, and it refused to play FLAC files
anyway.

I tested a few players (Amarok, Audacious, Aqualung, Totem, VLC and a
few more) and they all failed one way or the other. Most of them
(Amarok, Audacious, Audacious, VLC and more) added a very hearable gap
between each song. Some players used cross fading which works fine for
Live recordings, but not for medleys for instance, since there will be
a rhythm defect between the songs (too short time between last beat in
first song and first beat in second song). Maybe ordinary music
listeners won't hear it, but if you are a musician or maybe a dancer,
you will most likely hear it easily.

One audio player, I don't remember which one, could play one file
format gap-lessly, but not another and certainly not when playing one
format after another…

Next time I test something, I will take notes and save them, maybe
write some kind of report, so I don't have to write all this every
time… ;D

I use Sound Juicer for that. It's already pre installed in Ubuntu. I
don't know about 9.04, but it's default in 8.10.
