In order to make timidity sound better, if you have enough disk space, you can 
install the fluid-soundfont-gm and fluid-soundfont-gs packages. The newest 
timidity package has configurations for these soundfonts which just need to be 
sourced from timidity.cfg. You may also want to comment out the freepats stuff.

As of the version I have here on Jaunty, freepats is recommended, but not 
required, so unless you are running wildmidi, which only works with freepats, 
you can safely remove the freepats package once you get timidity configured to 
play using fluid-soundfont.
