Indeed. In general, my issues with the newer Xorg have not been quite
as severe as those reported by others.
In any case, I would definitely suggest that the OP try it (enabling
UXA mode). Worst case scenario, it works poorly and he goes back to
EXA; he could also be lucky, like me. He seemed to indicate that
desktop effects were a high importance issue to him, so it's certainly
worth a try.

Correct.
Linux mooby 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:57:59 UTC 2009 i686
ii xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu9

The machine is an Acer Aspire 5920-6959 laptop (which, by the way,
works nearly perfectly with Ubuntu, out of the box).

Huh. I'll have to keep my eyes open for this. I did notice that the
cache was using all available RAM yesterday, but didn't think anything
of it -- normally, this would be a good thing, no? Between then and
now, the machine was hibernating, and now that I've woken it up, the
RAM is mostly free!
I'll report back after a day or two, if you're interested.
