Well... actually there is *if* root user is enabled - here is mine:

root@<user>:~# ls
Desktop  Documents  Music  PDF  Pictures  Public  Templates  Videos
root@<user>:~# cd ~/Desktop
root@<user>:~/Desktop# ls
gcalctool.desktop  turboprint.desktop  turboprint-monitor.desktop
root@<user>:~/Desktop#
