Vertical Gnome Panels

My problem is not that the panel is broad. I want it to be so. I prefer 
a broadvertical side panel with horizontal text on it to thin horizontal 
ones . I wanted at least to have the window list show up in a reasonable 
manner.
Anyway, I switched to KDE and it works more like I would  want.
 Too bad, I kind of liked Gnome...
