Yes, that seems to make my sound work much better.

But Skype isn't working still. And the thread listed above says:

Skype: Open Skype's Options, then go to Sound Devices. You need to
set "Sound Out" and "Ringing" to the "pulse" device, and set
"Sound In" to the hardware definition of your microphone. For
example, my laptop's microphone is defined as
    "plughw:I82801DBICH4,0".

But, in Skype's setup for the Sound devices only /dev/dsp and
/dev/dsp1 are listed.

Hum, thinking back I think I have

moseley at bumby2:~/iThenticate$ dpkg -l | grep skype
rc skype 2.0.0.72-1 Skype - Take a deep breath
ii skype-common 2.0.0.72-0medibuntu4 A VoIP software - common files - Medibuntu p
ii skype-static-oss 2.0.0.72-0medibuntu4 A VoIP software - static-oss variant - Medib

So I installed just the "skype" package from medibuntu and I see all
the options, but for any Sound In setting (default, pulse, QuickCam
Pro 9000 (plughw:Q9000,0) Skype reports a problem with the audio
device when trying to make a test call.
