Hard to tell since you provided no information about what you did, what
Ubuntu version you're using etc.

If it's really the Java plugin you're looking for (not JavaScript which
is built into the browser): what did you do to install the plugin?

BTW: Sun added the 64-bit plugin starting with Java 6u12. So, if you're
running a pre-Jaunty 64-bit version of Ubuntu you won't find the Sun
plugin in the official repositories.
