The only reason for me to HOPE that it will be free is that it is a Ubuntu
project and hence chances of it being free are more.

Yes. Maybe not now. But imagine a few years down the line where using Ubuntu
One and Eucalyptus you will host your own cloud.

It's not about Ubuntu security updates. It's about updates from the upstream
Dropbox for linux.
Since Dropbox is not a native linux application, it will updated the linux
version in the end. This is usually the case for other non-native linux
projects

The Ubuntu community helps in a lot of ways other than just coding. Example,
deployment in various scenarios on various devices, troubleshooting with the
binary, etc., bug triaging and upstream notification, etc.
