My thoughts are that you are using a system that is different than what
you are used to. Click and install....MS.
On a system like *nix, you can compile any program that is a binary with
the right tools. Not a binary designed for an MS kernel, mind you. But
just about any program, or script written for any flavor of *nix
(meaning using the linus kernel) can be compiled on any other, mostly.
Compiling programs from source is always a sore spot with people new to
linux. They don't understand the aspect of source code compilation.
That said, install build-essential package and learn to compile programs
that aren't, or can't be included in the repos. It's a little tricky at
first, but I think you can get the hang of it pretty easily.
