The Live CD runs from a Gnome graphical interface just like the
interface that will be installed, so you can try Ubuntu without even
installing it.

The Alternate CD does not have a Graphical interface and includes
additional resources for specific installations such as Raid, etc. It
is also is useful for systems with less RAM than advised.
