control.fifo and mplayer ?

I was once using

find . -type f | mplayer -playlist - -shuffle -loop 0

to shuffle tunes (cd to tunes dir first, and this plays all subdirs,
etc. recursively),
and

echo quit > /home/tony/.mplayer/ctrl.fifo

to stop it from playing, but, that was on PCLOS.
Now, since installing ubuntu, I have dropped a ctrl.fifo in my .mplayer,
but using the
second script here is not stopping play.
I just copied the same ctrl.fifo I was using in PCLOS, since I had my
/home all backed up on a USB storage drive.
All the same, now I have to kill the mplayer pid to stop play.
I think I have to do something to the .fifo or to mplayer so it will
mind the fifo, or sacrifice a goat, or do a dance nekkid under a full
moon, or something, but can't recall what, for the life of me,
and can't find anything by googling any combination of fifo mplayer
etc., and, of course,
the mplayer online docs are not helpful in this instance.

anyone?

thanks,
tony
