could someone recommend a small gnome based operating system?

Small and gnome-based are somewhat mutually exclusive due to the huge
amount of libraries and supported files required even just to run a
basic Gnome desktop.  If you want something really lightweight use
Puppy Linux or Damn Small Linux.  Or go ahead and use Xubuntu, I have
a USB stick that boots Xubuntu, works smoothly even with 256MB RAM, if
you can find a computer that old that will actually boot from a USB
device!
