Free (as in freedom) pdf editor

This thread (all the way back to 2007) and the archives are full of
suggestions. I've tried nearly all "free" packages.. some work for some
things, some work for others; none seem to work well in a gui environment.

I've certainly no objection for paying for a well written linux program
(I use Turboprint printer drivers) do you?
