There are (at least) two things which Wicd does in another way than NM:
- Wicd connects the wireless independent from user login.
- Wicd automatically connects the wireless after the AP is available 
again.

Of course it depends on your requirements if that is an advantage or not 
but I prefer Wicd for those two points.
