There's no way to tell from the small amount of information you've given.  
/var/log/gdm.log & /var/log/Xorg.* should have more information.

Even with those, if your disk error caused it to load garbage in any one of 
the executables that X uses, you probably would never be able to see the 
cause just because X crashed, but you _should_ see other indications of disk 
failure in your logs.  fsck everything, just in case.
