karl at karl-hardy:~$ man vim
karl at karl-hardy:~$ vim --version
VIM - Vi IMproved 7.1 (2007 May 12, compiled Jan  8 2009 02:12:14)
Included patches: 1-138
Compiled by buildd at rothera.buildd
Small version without GUI. Features inc

        On Jaunty the version is:

karl at Mycrap:~$ vim --version
The program 'vim' can be found in the following packages:
 * vim
 * vim-gnome
 * vim-tiny
 * vim-gtk
 * vim-nox
Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package>
bash: vim: command not found

I got just plain vim and it says:

karl at Mycrap:~$ vim --version
VIM - Vi IMproved 7.2 (2008 Aug 9, compiled Mar 19 2009 15:31:01)
Included patches: 1-79
Compiled by buildd at rothera.buildd
Huge version without GUI. Features included (+) or not (-):
