Unfortunately, this didn't help. I added
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
to the device section and restarted X, but mplayer still shows an blank
screen and the BadAlloc errors. xvinfo gave the same output with and
without the option.

what may help (although I don't know how) is the difference between the
jaunty and the suse11 output of xvinfo:
