Sounds like it may be this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/299280
there is a workaround noted there that requires a minor edit of your 
xorg.conf file  I have not had this problem, and you didn't post the 
entire error message, so I can't tell for sure.
