Hey Mark, Did the same thing... fact, after reporting to bug list, 
ubuntu list,
ubuntu forums, I gave up... Since Evolution, has so many bugs... 
Evolution should be a option,
not part of the gnome install... I just remove 3/4 of evolution from 
9.04, and switch to Thunderbird,
3.0 2beta with calender all is well.

Oh, here a trick, you don't need to setup a separate no-gmail account,
just setup a separate OUT Bound filter, based on that folder., have it 
copy outbox message,
back into Ubuntu User folder, there you go.
