Try this. Go to synaptic, apt-get or aptitude and download

ubuntu-resticted-extras

This will install a whole slew of non-free packages, including

flash-plugin-nonfree

which is the plugin you need to have for flash "talk" to your mozilla
browsers. Whether we like it or not, the code for flash is resricted,
proprietary, and does not meet with the requirements to be circulated
or amended or have source code attached. There are some items of
software that have been developed by the free software community - such
as gnash - which are getting as good as flash but aren't there yet, and
there is also a free (as in unfettered) plugin to get gnash to talk to
the mozilla browsers

mozilla-plugin-gnash

You have to install the application you are going to use (Flash or
gnash) AND the relevant plugin to make it OK in Firefox.
