Are you getting these messages about a "known good" video that should play or does play on other players? Or is this the video that you have edited, clipped or whatever and now resaved? In other words, can mplayer and xine play other videos? If not, then this is a system wide problem. But if the problem is with the videos you deited with avidemux, then read on. 

What format and settings are you using to output the videos? (and what 'buntu version in case that makes a difference) I have found that Avidemux is a very useful tool but that it will not argue with you about the settings that you choose, it will just do as it is told and generate an unusable file. 

I am not at my desk where I do video edits right now, but if you can tell us what sort of file you want to get when you are done (and what the input files are, then I'll see what I have done that worked)

Avidemux is not good for playback, i think because it is designed for editing and has to mux on the fly. But it is troubling that it can't initialize the sound. Again the question what is the input file. Also, Avidemux has a setting for just about everything. Have you compared it's settings with your system wide sound settings?
